Eventually, the salespeople were too busy maintaining existing customers that the roles were broken into Account Manager and Sales, with the former handling existing customers.

Eventually, this new Sales team was so busy trying to close deals with potential customers, and weren’t spending enough time finding new leads to reach out to. Thus, the role is splintered again into Account Executives and Sales Development Reps.
