Beginner Tips

  • Gain speed
  • Rock over from left to right, put about 90% of the pressure on the outer ski’s inner edge.
  • Contrary to my previous belief, you actually want some distance between your skis. Kinda around shoulder length.
  • As you rock, be patient and let the ski build up in pressure and then turn. Do not rotate your skis as you’ll shed and lose speed.
  • Keep center of gravity forward. When shifting the weight, shift it diagonally (i.e. towards the direction you intend to go)
  • As you shift, eventually you want your outer leg to fully extend. Be sure that it’s your ski let that extends, and not your body rising up. Also, as you’re extending let it happen naturally instead of pushing your leg to extend, as that’ll cause shedding
  • To maximize the carving angle, you can try to lift the inner leg a little more. It makes a big difference.

Other Tips

  • We widen our stance during carving. A wider stance provides stability, whereas a narrower stance allows for more manoeuvrability on moguls.
